Garage Door Gets Stuck on One Side: Common Causes

Stand in your driveway and look at the door. What you can see from there tells you most of what you need to know.

A garage door is meant to travel as one unit. When one side falls behind, something has stopped carrying its share of the load. Which component depends entirely on how the door is failing — and that is what this guide sorts out.

Before you go any further: stop pressing the button. Repeatedly forcing a door that is visibly stuck turns a small repair into a large one, and it is the single most common way a minor fault becomes an expensive one.

Symptom One: One Side Sits Lower Than the Other

The door still moves, but it hangs on an angle. The top edge is not level with the header when closed, or one corner leads the other on the way up.

This is a lifting problem. Something that should be carrying weight on that side is not.

The most likely cause is a cable. A cable runs down each side of the door and shares the lifting load with the springs. When one frays, slips off its drum or snaps, that side loses its support instantly. Look for a cable that is slack, hanging, or wound unevenly around its drum.

Next most likely is a spring. Springs counterbalance the door’s weight so the opener only has to guide it. Both are technician work, without exception. Cables and springs hold enormous stored tension. This is where people get seriously hurt attempting a fix. Leave the door closed, stop using the opener, and book a repair.

Symptom Two: The Door Catches or Binds Partway

The door travels normally, then hits a point where one side grabs, rubs or stops. It might grind through it, or it might stall entirely.

This is a friction problem, and it usually sits in the guiding hardware rather than the lifting hardware.

Check the tracks first. Look along both vertical tracks from the floor up. You are looking for bends, dents, widening gaps between track and wall, and loose mounting brackets. A knock from a car or trailer is a common cause. Regular garage door track cleaning prevents the grime version of this problem, though it will not fix a bent track.

Then watch the rollers. Healthy rollers spin. A seized one slides instead, and a broken one sits at an odd angle. Rollers on one side often wear faster than the other, which is exactly how a one-sided fault begins.

Look at the panels and hinges. Finally, check for something simple. A screw, a stone, a hardened lump of grease or a bird’s nest in the track will stop a roller cold. Shine a torch inside both tracks. Loose debris you can lift out by hand is fair game. A track bent around the obstruction is not.

Symptom Three: The Door Looks Displaced or Off Track

The rollers have left the track entirely. The door sits visibly out of position, movement is badly restricted, and the whole thing looks wrong rather than just uneven.

This is different in kind from the first two symptoms, not just degree.

An off-track door’s weight is no longer properly supported on that side. Trying to lift it, lever it, or wrestle the rollers back into the track is genuinely dangerous — these doors are heavy, and they can come down. Continued operation can bring panels with them. What You Can Safely Check Yourself

Three things, and no more:

Look at the door from the front. Compare both sides. Is the top edge level? Is one corner lower? Photograph it — it genuinely helps your technician.

Inspect the tracks and rollers visually. Bends, gaps, obstructions, rollers sitting where they should. Looking only. No hammering, levering or forcing anything back into position.

Clear loose debris. If you can lift it out by hand, lift it out.

Everything else — cables, springs, bent tracks, off-track doors, panel replacement — needs someone with the right tools and training.

Warning Signs That Mean Stop Using the Door

  • The door is visibly crooked when opening or closing
  • One side sits lower than the other when closed
  • You can see a slack, frayed or hanging cable
  • There is a visible gap in the spring coil above the door
  • A track is bent, or a roller has left it
  • The opener strains, hums or reverses partway
  • The door feels much heavier by hand than it used to

Any one of these means the door has an active mechanical fault. Every additional cycle spreads the damage to parts that are currently fine.

Why is one side of my garage door lower than the other?

Almost always a cable or spring on that side. Both share the lifting load, and when one fails, that side stops being supported.

Can I still use the door manually if it’s stuck?

If you have had the same side stick before, the underlying cause was probably never addressed. One-sided faults tend to be self-reinforcing: a worn roller lets the door sit slightly askew, which stresses the hinges, which pulls the panel out of line, which puts more load on that roller.

Breaking that cycle means diagnosing the original fault rather than replacing whatever failed most recently. It is also the strongest argument for regular servicing, where a technician checks balance, hardware and wear before any of it becomes visible from the driveway.

Keep the tracks and the door’s path clear of bikes, bins and boxes. And treat new noises or slightly uneven movement as early warnings rather than quirks — acting then is far cheaper than acting later.
